Practical experience

To obtain authorisation you must meet an education requirement and a practical experience requirement. The duration and type of practical experience working with electricity depend on the authorisation type you are applying for. Make sure you find out exactly which requirements are relevant to your application.

Electrical installation work

To meet the practical experience requirement you must have experience of electrical installation work. Electrical installation work is defined in § 4 of the Electrical Safety Act. Work is considered to be electrical installation work if you

  • implement an electrical heavy current installation
  • modify an electrical heavy current installation
  • repair an electrical heavy current installation
  • permanently connect electrical equipment to a heavy current installation
  • disconnect electrical equipment from a heavy current installation to which the equipment is permanently attached.

Electrical installation work is therefore all work that is carried out on a heavy current installation, from generation up to and including the socket, and any permanent connection and disconnection of electrical equipment.

Other work involving electricity

It is not just electrical installation work that can be credited as practical experience. You can also be partially credited for other work involving electricity (up to half the required time). Note that other work involving electricity must be in one of the fields set out in Annexes 1, 2 or 3 of the regulations EKSÄK-FS 2017:4. Examples of such work include the design, dimensioning, fault location and verification of high voltage and low voltage installations or equipment connected to them.

Practical experience before 1 July 2017

If your practical experience was undertaken before 1 July 2017, the electrical installation work will have been carried out under the supervision of an authorised electrician. You and the authorised electrician will usually have been employed in the same company. The authorised electrician who supervised your work is also responsible for attesting your practical experience when you apply for authorisation. Use the form specified by the National Electrical Safety Board.

If you and the supervising authorised electrician were not employed in the same company, exceptional arrangements will have been made under the old regulations. This means that the scope of the work and the supervision must be documented and attached to the form attesting practical experience.

Practical experience after 1 July 2017

To be credited for practical experience after 1 July 2017, the electrical installation work must have been carried out in an electrical installation company's self-audit scheme. An attestation confirming this is required from someone who is entitled to represent the company. Use the form specified by the National Electrical Safety Board.

Note that the attestation must relate to work which you did yourself, and not work which the company is allowed to carry out generally.

Other EEA countries or Switzerland

If you received your education in Sweden, your practical experience can be undertaken in Sweden, or in another EEA country or Switzerland. However, if you received your education outside Sweden, at least half of your practical experience must be undertaken in Sweden. The remaining time can be completed in another EEA country or in Switzerland. The form specified by the National Electrical Safety Board must be used to attest this kind of practical experience.

Authorisation types

The practical experience requirements for the different authorisation types are laid down in the National Electrical Safety Board's authorisation regulations ELSÄK-FS 2017:4.
