The holder's responsibility for electrical safety

A good work environment is only possible if electrical installations are safe. As the holder of an electrical installation, it is your responsibility to ensure that your installation is safe to work on – for electrical installation work, maintenance, cleaning or anything else.

There is a lot you can do as a holder to prevent electrical accidents and injuries caused by electricity. The responsibilities of the holder of an electrical installation include the following:

  • ensuring that people can safely work on and spend time near the installation and its electrical equipment.
  • ensuring that the installation interacts well with its surroundings and does not cause disruption.
  • continuously checking the installation and equipment, and addressing issues.
  • establishing continuous monitoring procedures.
  • providing information about the electrical installation to  individuals who will work on it.
  • making sure that everyone who works on the installation has the right skills for the job.
  • making sure that the electrical installation and included equipment has the correct markings and documentation, and also has the signs required by the regulations.

If you need to appoint an electrical installation company to carry out work on the installation, you, the holder, must always ensure that the company you intend to appoint is in the National Electrical Safety Board’s register of electrical installation companies. The company you appoint must be registered for the activity types involved in the work.
